Diocese of Algoma Coat of Arms & Visual Identity

The Diocese of Algoma Coat of Arms

The restored Coat of Arms is the primary heraldic symbol of the Diocese of Algoma.

It may be used for formal diocesan communications, episcopal materials, certificates, liturgical resources, publications, presentations, signage, archival purposes, and major diocesan initiatives.

This renewed version preserves the historic integrity of the original arms while providing a clean, scalable format suitable for both digital and print use.

The Armorial Bearings, gifted by Miss Margaret Banks of England and authorized by the College of Heralds, are described as follows:

Azure a Pastoral Staff and a Key ward upwards in saltire or surmounted by an open Book proper in chief Celestial Crown of the Second and in base a sprig of Maple of three leaves slipped also proper.

The Coat of Arms includes:

A Celestial Crown

“Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.” (Revelation 2:10)

An Open Book

God’s written word, open because in Christ we discover both the story of Jesus and our own story.

A Key

The apostolic authority entrusted to the bishop. (Matthew 16:19)

A Crozier

The pastoral calling to shepherd God’s people after the manner of the Good Shepherd.

Three Maple Leaves

The beauty and character of the Diocese of Algoma.

As we look to the future, this restored crest honours our past while equipping us for a new season of ministry.

Alongside the renewed Coat of Arms, the Diocese of Algoma is introducing a coordinated family of official logos designed to support consistent communication across diocesan ministries, events, departments, publications, and digital platforms.

These approved logos provide flexible options for websites, newsletters, social media, posters, worship resources, signage, presentations, letterheads, and promotional materials.

The logo family is rooted in the same heraldic foundation as the crest itself, ensuring that all diocesan communications remain visually connected to the Diocese’s Anglican identity and shared mission.

Which logo should I use?

Use the full-colour horizontal logo for most general communications. The stacked logo works well for posters, social media graphics, and centred layouts. The crest alone should be reserved for formal, ceremonial, or heritage-focused uses.

Using the Coat of Arms

The Diocesan Coat of Arms is the historic heraldic symbol of the Diocese of Algoma and should be used respectfully and without alteration.

Please do not redraw, recolour, crop, distort, rotate, outline, add effects to, or recreate the Coat of Arms manually.

Using black and white versions

Use the black version on light backgrounds when colour printing is unavailable or impractical.

Use the white or reverse version on dark backgrounds where the full-colour logo would not reproduce clearly.

Clear space and sizing

Leave sufficient space around the crest or logo so it is not crowded by text, borders, photos, or other graphic elements.

Do not reduce the logo to a size where the typography or heraldic details become unreadable.

Backgrounds and contrast

Place logos on clean backgrounds with strong contrast.

Avoid busy images, highly textured backgrounds, or colour combinations that reduce readability.

What not to do

Please do not:

· Stretch or compress the logos

· Change colours

· Add shadows or visual effects

· Rearrange elements

· Replace fonts

· Crop the logos

· Recreate the logos manually

· Place logos over visually busy imagery

Parish Logos and Custom Branding

Parishes may continue using their own parish logos, identities, and visual styles.

Parishes and ministries are also welcome to incorporate the Diocesan Coat of Arms into parish logos, ministry graphics, websites, and other local communications as a visible sign of their connection to the wider Diocese of Algoma.

To help ensure clarity, consistency, and respectful use of the Coat of Arms, we ask that any newly created logos or adapted designs incorporating it be reviewed by the Communications Office prior to final use.

The Diocese is happy to assist parishes and ministries with logo development, crest integration, and branding guidance where helpful.
