Archbishop Anne Designates August 23 as Refugee Sunday in the Diocese of Algoma
The Most Rev. Anne Germond, Archbishop of Algoma, has designated Sunday, August 23, 2026, as Refugee Sunday throughout the Diocese of Algoma.
In a recent letter to clergy and parish leaders, Archbishop Anne encouraged congregations across the diocese to join Anglicans across Canada in prayer, reflection, and learning about the experiences of refugees and displaced people around the world.
The diocesan observance responds to an invitation from Archbishop Shane Parker, Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, who has encouraged dioceses and parishes to set aside a Sunday focused on refugee awareness, welcome, and support.
“Refugee Sunday offers an opportunity for us to pray for those who have been displaced by war, violence, persecution, and environmental disaster, while renewing our commitment to welcome the stranger and accompany those seeking safety and a new beginning,” Archbishop Anne wrote.
Parishes are encouraged to mark Refugee Sunday in ways that are meaningful within their local contexts. Congregations may choose to incorporate prayers and liturgical resources into worship, offer opportunities for learning and discussion, highlight refugee sponsorship ministries, or share stories of welcome and hospitality within their communities.
To support local observances, Alongside Hope and its Refugee Network have developed a collection of worship and educational resources, including prayers, liturgical materials, music suggestions, children’s resources, and information about refugee sponsorship and accompaniment.
