St. Luke’s Celebrates

Celebrating Faithful Service Across Generations at St. Luke’s Cathedral

On Sunday, June 7, St. Luke’s Cathedral gathered for a joyful Evensong service celebrating the many people whose gifts help shape the life of the cathedral community.

The service brought together clergy, choir members, Sunday School children, and members of the Junior, Girls’, and Boys’ Auxiliary (JAGABA) for an afternoon of worship, thanksgiving, and recognition.

Among those honoured was Angie Barber, who received her eight-year Girls’ Auxiliary certificate from Bishop Victoria Matthews. Angie was also recognized with a diocesan pin in acknowledgement of her participation as a youth delegate to Diocesan Synod last year. Additional gifts and recognition were presented through the leadership of JAGABA Coordinator Cathy Courtney.

The congregation also expressed its gratitude to Cathy Courtney herself, who welcomed Bishop Victoria with a presentation of flowers on behalf of the cathedral community.

Another special presentation recognized Laura Strum for her years of faithful musical leadership. Laura received a Canterbury Cross necklace from Canterbury Cathedral Shop as a thank-you gift in appreciation for the music she has provided for children’s drama productions, Christmas presentations, and the Children’s Stations of the Cross service held each Good Friday.

A highlight of the service was the candle-lighting ceremony involving the cathedral’s Sunday School children. As the congregation sang Jesus Bids Us Shine, children gathered near the chancel steps holding candles, creating a moving reminder of the call to share Christ’s light in the world.

The service concluded with fellowship and celebration among members of the Cathedral Choir, clergy, lay leaders, children, youth, and families whose dedication continues to enrich the worship and ministry of St. Luke’s Cathedral.

The photographs capture a community giving thanks for service, encouraging younger generations in faith, and celebrating the many ways people of all ages contribute to the life of the Church.
