Restoration of Historic Anglican Cemetery

Garden River First Nation is calling on community members of all ages to roll up their sleeves and help care for a place of remembrance and history.

On Saturday, July 11, 2026, volunteers will gather from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a community-wide clean-up of the Garden River Anglican Cemetery, helping to restore and maintain an important sacred space that honours generations of families and community members.

The event will focus on clearing overgrown grass and weeds, removing litter and debris, and gently cleaning headstones under appropriate guidance. Organizers hope the day will not only improve the appearance of the cemetery but also strengthen community connections and respect for those who came before us.

“This is an opportunity for people to come together in a spirit of care and stewardship,” organizers note. “Every helping hand makes a difference.”

Volunteers are encouraged to bring gloves, a water bottle, sturdy footwear, camping chairs, and any yard tools they are able to share, such as rakes or clippers. A barbecue lunch and refreshments will be provided for all participants.

The clean-up is open to everyone, whether they can contribute for the entire day or just an hour. Students seeking volunteer hours are especially encouraged to attend.

In addition to helping preserve an important community landmark, participants will have the opportunity to connect with neighbours and contribute to a project that honours the memories of loved ones laid to rest there.

Individuals or teams wishing to participate are asked to register by emailing info@gardenriver.org.
