In Memoriam: The Venerable Susan de Gruchy
Please join the people of the Diocese of Algoma as we pray for the repose of the soul of the Ven. Susan de Gruchy who died on Sunday July 27th in Sault Ste Marie with her husband, the Ven. Harry Huskins, by her side.
Susan’s life and ministry have left an indelible mark on the Diocese. She was ordained a deacon in May 1984 at the Church of the Epiphany, Sudbury, and ordained to the priesthood in May 1985 at St. Michael and All Angels, Thunder Bay. With her ordination, Susan became the first woman to be ordained in Algoma—a historic moment of change and courage in the life of the Church.
Susan began her ministry as Assistant Curate at St. Michael and All Angels, then served as Incumbent of All Saints, Onaping (1986), and in 1991, she was appointed Incumbent of St. Alban the Martyr (Capreol), St. Mark’s (Garson), and the Church of the Good Shepherd (Skead Road). In 1995, she and Harry served together in team ministry at Christ Church, Lively.
Her leadership extended beyond the parish level. She was elected Regional Dean of Sudbury/Manitoulin in 1993 and became Archdeacon of Sudbury-Manitoulin in 1994. She was later appointed Executive Archdeacon for the Diocese of Algoma, where she played a key role in overseeing the Postulancy process for those discerning ordained ministry. For many years, Susan and Harry also served as Executive Officers for the Ecclesiastical Province of Ontario.
Susan is remembered for her steady and compassionate leadership, her advocacy for clergy wellness and inclusion, and her warm-hearted presence. She had a particular fondness for animals and a deep joy in everyday ministry.
A memorial service is planned for Friday, September 5th at 11:00 am at St. Luke’s Cathedral, Sault Ste. Marie.
We give thanks for Archdeacon Susan’s pioneering witness, her deep commitment to Christ and the Church, and her enduring legacy in the hearts of those she served.
May she rest in peace and rise again in glory.
