“They will soar on wings like eagles” (Isaiah 40:31)

Dear Friends in Christ,

Last night, at the opening worship of General Synod 2025, we were blessed beyond words by the presence and preaching of Bishop Michael Curry. His message—joyful, prophetic, and deeply rooted in the Gospel—reminded us that love is not just a feeling or an idea, but a powerful force. A way of life.

He invited us, as only he can, to walk more boldly in the way of love.

During the reception that followed, I had the honour of offering a few words of thanks. I said, “If anyone can help us soar on wings like eagles, it’s you.” And I meant it. Bishop Curry’s leadership—so alive with courage, compassion, and clarity—has shaped a generation of faithful people, in Canada and across the world. His sermon last night was no exception. He helped us step fully into the promise of this Synod’s theme: hope, strength, and renewal.

That theme, drawn from the prophet Isaiah, is one I have carried close to my heart throughout these past months of preparation. It speaks to a deep truth about our life together in Christ—that those who hope in the Lord are not merely sustained, but strengthened and renewed.

It’s a truth I have seen reflected time and again in the Diocese of Algoma.

I’ve seen it in your faithful attendance at worship, in the welcome you extend to strangers, and in the meals you prepare with love. I’ve seen it in the music you offer, the prayers you whisper, and the care you show to buildings, communities, and one another. I’ve seen it in your sacrificial generosity—in times of economic strain, no less—which has sustained ministry and enabled hope-filled outreach, both at home and beyond.

When I look around this Synod hall, I carry you with me: your stories, your ministries, and your faithfulness.

As we move into the days ahead—listening, discerning, and praying together—I ask for your continued prayers: for clarity of vision, for courage to speak the truth in love, and for the humility to be led by the Spirit in all we do.

This is not just a week of decision-making. It is a sacred time in the life of our Church. And I am deeply honoured to be here with the Algoma delegates, representing a diocese whose witness to the Gospel continues to inspire me daily.

May we all, by God’s grace, rise to meet the challenges and opportunities ahead—with hope that renews, with strength that endures, and with love that never fails.

With deep gratitude and every blessing,
