Rev. Dr. Peter Armstrong to Retire from St. Brice’s, North Bay

The Diocese of Algoma gives thanks for the faithful ministry of the Rev. Dr. Peter Armstrong, who has announced his retirement as Incumbent of St. Brice’s Anglican Church, North Bay, effective September 15, 2025.

Ordained in 1989 following his theological training at Wycliffe College, Peter’s ministry has spanned rural and urban contexts in Nova Scotia and Ontario, always marked by a deep pastoral sensitivity and commitment to team ministry. Since 2015, he has served with quiet strength and steady leadership at St. Brice’s, where his impact will be deeply felt for years to come.

“Peter is so pastoral,” said Archbishop Anne Germond. “He has this calm and faithful presence that people are drawn to, and I know the congregation will really miss him.”

During his time at St. Brice’s, Peter led the parish through seasons of renewal and growth. In recent years, the congregation has become known for its welcoming spirit, particularly toward newcomers to Canada.

“They went from having no children one week to twelve the next,” said +Anne, reflecting on the parish’s rapid transformation. “It’s a testament to Peter’s openness and the congregation’s hospitality that they so quickly embraced the need for a Sunday School.”

Peter’s doctoral work focused on team ministry—an approach that has shaped his collaborative style of leadership across the years. He has also been a strong advocate for ecumenism and wider church partnerships, describing his own theology as a “generous orthodoxy.”

Alongside Peter in ministry has been his wife, Nancy, a committed member of the Diocesan Social Justice Committee and passionate advocate in the Church’s efforts to end human trafficking.

“Peter and Nancy are a team,” said +Anne. “Their love for the Church and for people shines through in everything they do. They will be deeply missed.”

We offer our heartfelt thanks to Peter for his years of devoted service in Algoma and beyond, and we pray for blessings of peace and joy as he and Nancy prepare for the next chapter.
