Together We Thrive

By Anne Wilson, Diocesan Representative – Anglican Foundation of Canada (AFC)

Thanks to a recent grant from the Anglican Foundation of Canada, the Parish of the Good Shepherd in Emsdale has secured $10,000 in funding to strengthen its dynamic children’s ministry, which serves the rural communities of Emsdale and Port Sydney through two programs: Emsdale Explorers and PA Day Fun Fridays.

These programs offer children a nourishing, imaginative space to gather, learn, and belong—providing structured activities, healthy snacks, storytelling, science experiments, and more. For Rev. Catherine Murkin and her team of committed volunteers, AFC’s grant is a lifeline. “Despite the unwavering support of parishioners,” she writes, “financial limitations have constrained our ability to expand workshop offerings and introduce new programs.” With this funding, the parish can now explore new creative opportunities and ensure that “every child has access to transformative learning experiences.”

This grant also aligns with AFC’s signature youth initiative: Say Yes! to Kids—now in its fifth year. Since 2021, SYTK has raised more than $755,000 for youth-focused outreach, empowering churches to expand programs in faith formation, arts and education, outdoor recreation, and more. With 150+ local campaigns launched coast to coast, SYTK has become the leading annual fundraiser for youth ministry across the Anglican Church of Canada.

Algoma’s participation in the 2025 campaign is led by Rev. Catherine, whose team—Good Shepherd Creators—is already blazing a trail to their $5,000 goal. Building on the strong foundation of the Emsdale Explorers program, the campaign is raising funds to expand into new creative territory, including music, art, guest speakers, and excursions. The team has already received a $1,000 matching gift through AFC’s Angel Donor program, doubling their early success and energizing their campaign.
