Bishop’s Dinner Raises app. $24,000
A Message from Archbishop Anne Germond
Dear people of God in Algoma – and beyond,
Your generosity knows no bounds!
It is with a joy-filled heart I write to extend my deepest and sincere thanks on behalf of the Anne Germond Legacy Fund Committee for the overwhelming support you showed during the launch of the Anne Germond Legacy Fund at our recent Synod in Sault Ste Marie.
Your generosity and enthusiasm were truly humbling. From the purchase of tickets for the banquet dinner at the Water Tower Inn to the many generous contributions to the Silent Auction, your participation made this event a remarkable success. What a gift it was to have the privilege of hearing Dr. Roberta Bondar’s address on leadership through her lived experience as a scientist, neurologist, astronaut, and photographer—which was insightful, touching, humorous, learned, and thought-provoking.
We were especially touched by the care and creativity that went into the over 60 donated auction items. These gifts spoke volumes about the spirit of our Diocese. From beautifully handcrafted cards and handmade treasures—like a delightful doll’s house and baby clothing—to the thoughtful experiences such as a guided garden walking tour, a cottage stay, caramel brittle, a picnic in Thunder Bay, and tickets to the Algoma Conservatory of Music. Added to this were many original paintings and other pictures reflecting the beauty of the landscape in the north. The stunning and imaginative deanery baskets were a highlight of the evening, each one filled with items too numerous and special to list.
Each item, so carefully selected, was a reflection of the love and dedication that defines our diocese.
I would like to give special thanks to Mhora Penny, Jennifer Baron, Jane Mesich, Mark Mesich and Jim Houghton who worked tirelessly to organize the items and coordinate the sale of the tickets. And a big shout out to Bev Barber and her team at the Water Tower Inn for providing us with such a fine meal and venue to enjoy our time together.
The members of the Anne Germond Legacy Fund Committee—Canon Bob Elkin and Mr. Jock Pirrie (Co-Chairs), Canon Ed Swayze, Ms. Anne Wilson and Mr. Terry Ames—worked tirelessly over the last months to prepare for the launch of the fund. We were so ably assisted in our efforts by Ms. Michelle Hauser from the Anglican Foundation of Canada, with Carla MacEwan providing staff support. Do check out our new website: www.anneslegacyfund.ca.
It is with great joy that I share we raised approximately $24,000.00 through ticket sales, the Silent Auction, and generous corporate donations from:
-
Mr. Sam Biasucci (Saldan Construction)
-
Mr. Gerry Lougheed (The Lougheed Foundation)
-
Mr. Larry Day (Dawson and Keenan – a Gallagher Company)
-
Mr. Murdoch Carter (Carter – McLean Law Firm)
This incredible amount marks a strong and inspiring beginning for the Anne Germond Legacy Fund, which will support the ongoing mission and ministry of the Church in Algoma for years to come.
To every parish, donor, volunteer, and participant—thank you. Your support demonstrated the deep bonds of community and shared purpose that unite us in Christ.
I would also like to thank you for supporting the effort by Thunder Bay–North Shore to raise funds to send a delegation of youth and leaders to CLAY (Canadian Lutheran Anglican Youth) in Saskatoon this summer. Your purchase of the cookies and other treats helped raise $1,000 toward this fund. Another great sign of Algoma supporting youth.
May the spirit of generosity and gratitude that marked this celebration continue to guide us as we build on this legacy and our shared ministry together.
We are an Easter people. May the Risen Christ continue to dwell within you all and may you be at peace,
+Anne
Archbishop of Algoma
