1.      1. We will be saying farewell to a valued member of the Synod Office staff next week.  Donna Bos will be retiring at the end of December, but her last day in the Office will be December 4.  Donna is one of our longest serving employees, having joined the Diocesan staff in May, 1998.  Donna has been our Receptionist here, has managed the satellite office at Diocesan Synods, and has provided staff support for the tenants of the McMurray Building apartment complex.  On a given day you might find Donna at her desk, en route to the bank, in an apartment doing a minor repair, or in the hall commiserating with one of the residents.  She has also organized seasonal events for the apartment tenants.  As we prepare for Donna’s impending departure, we are all realizing how many essential duties she has taken on over the years.  We wish Donna and her husband, Bernie, all the best in their retirement, and give thanks for all her many contributions over the past 11 years.

2.      2. The Rev. Stephen Blackmore has announced his resignation from Holy Trinity Church, Sault Ste Marie.  He and Allison will be returning to southern Ontario where he can be closer to his father, who is convalescing from a serious automobile accident, and where he will continue his academic studies.  Stephen has been the incumbent at Holy Trinity since January 2007.  His final Sunday will be 10 January 2010.  Our gratitude, prayers and best wishes go with him and Allison.

3.      3. Anglican musician, Jane Best, was a winner last year in an acapella hymn competition at Pepperdine University, California, for her hymn Walk in Newness of Life.  Jane has written several songs which have been based on Bishop’s mottos, and sung at various Diocesan events.  Her most recent song, God’s Work in Us, was well received at the October Diocesan Synod.  There will be another “Ascending Voice” acapella conference at Pepperdine in May of 2010 where another composition competition will be held, this time for psalm settings.  Jane is wondering whether anyone has a psalm that they would like to have set to music.  She suggests that she would write a few settings, select one to send to the competition, and also would know that her music would be useful.  Please advise Christine at the Synod Office (adminassistant@dioceseofalgoma.com) if you wish to follow up on this offer, and I will forward the suggestions on to Jane.

The Rev. Michael Hankinson made Honorary Canon

In one of his first Episcopal acts, the Bishop of Algoma has named The Rev. Michael Hankinson an Honorary Canon of the Cathedral of St Luke the Evangelist, Sault Ste Marie.  Canon Hankinson is a graduate of St John’s College, Winnipeg and was ordained in historic St John’s Cathedral, Winnipeg, in 1951.  He served in parishes in the Dioceses of Rupert’s Land and Qu’Appelle before coming to the Diocese of Algoma in 1964.  His experience ministering in First Nations communities in the Prairies prepared him for an effective ministry in St John’s Church, Garden River and St George’s, Echo Bay.  In 1970 he took up the charges of St Saviour’s, Blind River and St James’, Massey.  This was followed by incumbencies at Church of the Ascension, Sudbury; St Mark’s, Garson and Church of the Good Shepherd, Skead Road.  In 1978 he was named Legion Padre to Falconbridge Garson Branch 336.

In 1987, after 36 years of ordained ministry, Canon Hankinson retired from parochial service.  He continued to offer himself to the Church on a part-time basis in Goulais River and Heyden before finally settling in Garson with Muriel, his wife of 54 years.  He continues to serve as Honorary Assistant at Church of the Epiphany, Sudbury.  Bishop Andrews commented that it was a privilege to confer this honour on Canon Hankinson, saying, ‘Michael’s quiet, persistent and sacrificial commitment to the Church is inspirational to a generation of younger clergy.

A service of Collation will be held during the Forty-fourth Synod of the Diocese of Algoma, being held in Sault Ste Marie in October 2009.  Well-wishes can be directed to The Ven. Tom Corston, Church of the Epiphany, 85 Larch Street, Sudbury, Ontario  P3E 1B8 or tom.corston@sympatico.ca.

News Flash for Algoma

Our Vision

We are joyful Anglicans, serving, growing, and proclaiming Christ’s love in Algoma and beyond.

The new Diocesan Strategic Plan 2009-2014, Live the Vision and Proclaim the Joy, was approved by the Executive Committee at their March meeting.  The Strategic Plan is a 5 year plan that identifies where Algoma wants to be, and how it is going to get there.  The results oriented Plan includes 7 Strategic Objectives, and 32 specific strategies.

The entire Strategic Plan will soon be available on the Diocesan website (www.dioceseofalgoma.com).

In accordance with one of the recommendations in the Strategic Plan, a Management Consulting firm has been hired to make recommendations to the Bishop-Elect and the Executive Committee relating to the optimal organizational structure to achieve the seven strategic objectives of the plan.  Following a request for proposals from several consulting firms and a careful evaluation process, Wellington Partners has been selected.  Mr. Dan Brooks of Wellington will be the project manager, and he will present the final report at the June 2009 Executive Committee meeting.

A Strategic Plan Implementation Committee will be appointed by the Bishop-Elect and the Executive Committee.  The terms of reference are being developed for this committee, which will ensure the timely implementation of the objectives, and follow-up evaluation.

The status of the Strategic Plan will be presented at Synod 2009, and at each subsequent Synod.

May the grace of God bless us all as we journey together to grow and build Algoma.
