Feast of the Presentation 2014
The Bishop has received word from The Venerable Linda White, Archdeacon of Temiskaming and Incumbent of Northern Lights Parish, and her husband, The Reverend Richard White, Incumbent of St Brice’s, North Bay, of their intention to retire as of 1 May 2014. The announcement went out in their respective parishes on Sunday.
A graduate of Queen’s, Lakehead, and Wycliffe, Linda taught school for 13 years before her ordination to the diaconate (1994) and priesthood (1995). She has served Northern Lights Parish, which has included Christ Church, Englehart; St John’s, New Liskeard; St Paul’s, Haileybury; St James’, Cobalt and St Faith’s, Charlton, since 2002. She has been active in many diocesan roles, including as a spiritual director for Cursillo, as a member of the board of directors for Camp Temiskaming, and as a representative of the diocese on the Provincial Synod and Executive. Since 2002, she has been the Territorial Archdeacon of Temiskaming.
Richard, a graduate of Ohio University, Carleton, Wheaton College and Wycliffe, was for many years a teacher in Sault Ste Marie and Desbarats. Ordained with his wife, he has been the Incumbent of Holy Trinity, Temiscaming since 2004 and St Brice’s, North Bay, since 2007. He is the only Algoma incumbent licensed to solemnize marriages in Quebec. With a keen interest in lay training, Richard was Chaplain of Lay Readers for two deaneries. A regular contributor of interesting historical articles to the Algoma Anglican, Richard is also involved in Cursillo and is a fine musician and an avid cyclist. In the summers he can usually be found raising money for the Canadian Bible Society in their annual ‘Bikes for Bibles’ event.
Much of Richard’s and Linda’s ministry has been in team situations. They were missionaries in Jordan and Cyprus for six years. From 1994-2002 they served parishes on Manitoulin Island, with Linda as the Incumbent at St John’s, Kagawong; All Saints, Gore Bay; and St Peter’s, Silver Water; and Richard the Incumbent at Holy Trinity, Little Current as well as the congregations in St Luke’s, Sucker Creek; St Andrew’s and St Peter’s, Sheguiandah; and St James’ Massey and Gowan Gilmor, Sagamok. For another five years they were in team ministry in Northern Lights Parish. However, for the last six years they have been ‘living together apart’, with Linda residing in Haileybury and Richard at their home in North Bay. They look forward to changing their status to ‘living together together’, and have expressed a desire to remain pastorally active in the diocese.
